Building a Foundation for Reading and Spelling
Fundations makes learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for life-long literacy. It thoroughly teaches the foundational skills of the Common Core State Standards, and supports the reading standards, writing standards, and standards for language.
Fundations’ research-based approach and extensive program materials allow K-3 teachers to confidently present a carefully structured reading and spelling curriculum using engaging, multisensory techniques.
It is implemented as a phonics and spelling supplement or the word study block to the core literacy program.

Fundations Implementation
Fundations provides a multi-tiered system of support.
Prevention Model (Tier 1)
Instruction is delivered to all students in the general education classroom for 30 minutes daily.
Early Intervention Model (Tier 2)
Instruction is provided to at-risk students in need of strategic intervention and is conducted in a small group setting by the classroom teacher and/or interventionist.
- If Fundations is provided in a Tier 1, whole-class setting, this strategic intervention consists of double dose Fundations lessons for an additional 30 minutes 3-5 times per week.
- If Fundations is not provided in a Tier 1, whole-class setting, the strategic intervention must also include the Fundations standard lesson (30 minutes daily) plus double dose lessons for
an additional 30 minutes 3-5 times per week.
NOTE: Wilson Reading System® is the preferred program for second and third grade students requiring an intensive (Tier3) intervention program.

Early Intervention Model (Tier 2)
Intervention teachers often teach students at various levels throughout the day. The Fundations Multi-Level Kits provide the materials needed to teach different levels.
The Wilson Academy® Prevention Learning Community (PLC) provides additional materials, including printable resources and a monthly Fundations Expert Tip by Wilson Literacy Specialists. Prevention Learning Community membership is provided with the purchase of a Fundations Teacher’s Manual and/or upon completion of a Fundations professional learning workshop.
